Piano hammer knuckles regulate the hammer escapement under the string. Piano hammer knuckles are essential to the escapement. Knuckle leathers often become furrowed and/or dried out. Hammer knuckles are often worn out, but they must be perfectly rounded. Using powdered graphite avoids these parts becoming noisy.
