    Steinway

    New York, USA

After the death of Heinrich Steinweg in 1871, the Steinweig company was founded in Hamburg, Germany, in 1880. Steinway & Sons comes from this firm founded by the German Steinweg family, who already had a Steinweg piano brand. The name Steinway is an Americanisation of Steinweg, the family’s original name. The original brand still exists in Germany today, under the name of Grotrian-Steinweg. Steinweg arrived in America at the beginning of March 1849 with his three sons, and he worked for Bacon & Raven. New York was a nirvana for piano makers, as most households had a piano. He founded his own firm in 1853 with his sons, with 6,000 dollars in capital. Steinway pianos from Hamburg and those from New York do not have the same tone. The company is now the world leader in top of the range pianos.
